Alex the African Grey Parrot
Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, bought Alex in 1977 from a pet store in the Northwest Side. She began a 30-year study that would alter our perception of avian intelligence. Her research with Alex challenged the common belief birds could only mimic human language, but not understand the meaning.
What is Alex?
