Alex the African Grey Parrot
Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, bought Alex in 1977 from a pet store in the Northwest Side. She began an ongoing study for 30 years that would change our perception of the intelligence of avian species. Her research with Alex challenged the common belief birds could only imitate human language without understanding the meaning.
What is Alex?
